In the nineteenth century, French chemist Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier confirmed that quantitative measurements of chemical processes were essential for understanding the behavior of matter. In this way, he determined that all samples of a compound were equal in their composition and proportion of elements. This is called the law of constant composition.

The volume of chemical substances produced depends on their purity. In general, bulk chemicals are more refined and are able to tolerate more impurities. While fine chemicals are less complex, they are used as building blocks for larger molecules. Chemical production also involves purification and batch analysis. These processes are necessary to ensure the quality of the product. The CAS index lists both kinds of chemicals. It is important to note that the purity of a substance depends on the application.

This gas has been used as a weapon in the past century, but it is safe to assume that humans started combining chemicals long before recorded history. Bronze, for example, is made by mixing copper and tin. This metal was then used as a tool and weapon.

A combination of elements is called a coordination complex. It is a chemical compound with a metal at its center and one or more nonmetals atoms surrounding the metal. These atoms coordinate with the metal to form a chemical compound. Some of these compounds are diastereomers while others are enantiomers. These are referred to as ligands. They have the same structure and function, but they differ in the way they react with the metal.
